Sonamarg lives up to its name — when sunlight hits these alpine meadows, they genuinely turn gold. At 2,800 metres on the road to Ladakh, Sonamarg is Kashmir's most dramatic destination. Raw mountain scenery, the Sindh River valley, and the Thajiwas Glacier — a real glacier you can walk up to and touch.
The drive from Srinagar (80 km, 2 hours) is itself one of Kashmir's most scenic routes, following the Sindh River through stunning gorges. Sonamarg is a perfect day trip and also serves as the Baltal base camp for the Amarnath Yatra.
A real glacier just a short trek or pony ride from Sonamarg town. Snow remains year-round. Touch actual glacial ice, play in the snow, and enjoy panoramic mountain views.

The drive TO Sonamarg is half the experience. The highway follows the Sindh River through dramatic gorges and valleys. Ask your driver to stop for photos — the viewpoints are incredible.
